Having troubles adding skins to your Yahoo! Messenger (version 5.5)? Then, you came to the right place! Below are step-by-step instructions on getting your new skin up. If you need extra help installing them on your page, please contact me at knarrly@hotmail.com
NOTE: This page has been updated on August 25, 2004. The help section is fully compatible with the older version of Yahoo! Messenger. (v5.5)
- Download the file of your choice, and unzip it using a zip program on your computer.
Not sure of which zip program to use? Then how about
- Once unzipped, there should be quite a few files files. The "toolbar" files include: message.bmp, chat.bmp, mobile.bmp, and add.bmp. (The previous version of messenger had a file called call.bmp instead of the mobile.bmp, which is included in my downloads just in case you do not have the most recent version.) The next file, background.bmp, makes up the background for your messenger. Some skin downloads also include the following: offline_user.bmp, online_user.bmp, idle_user.bmp, and busy_user.bmp (these change the little status indicators and are not necessary.)
- Place the four files at this location:
C:\program files\yahoo!\messenger\skins\NEW FOLDER\ (This is assuming Yahoo! Messenger is installed on your C: drive. If you are using a drive other than C:, you would place it in that drive.)
Where it says NEW FOLDER, you will be creating a new folder within the skins folder. Make sure that the name you choose for the folder of the new skin is descriptive of the skin, and different than your other skin names. (For instance, if you downloaded the Christmas skin, it's a good idea to name the folder Christmas.) For more assistance in moving the files to this directory, click here.
- Open Yahoo! Messenger. If you don't have it installed on your computer, or are using either Yahoo! Pager or an older version of Yahoo! Messenger, please download the latest copy.
- On the menu bar, click Login. On the pull down menu, select Preferences...

- On the box that comes up, click on Appearance on the left side.

- Then, go to the pull-down box next to the words "Current Theme:". Select the theme you downloaded from the choices. (You might need to change the text color also depending on the theme.)
- Click the Apply button near the bottom, then the OK button. Your new skin should now be on your Yahoo! Messenger.
- Go into My Computer, and find the files included with the download (listed in the instructions above.) Hold control, and click on each until all four files are highlighted. Then, hold control, and hit c to copy the files.
- Now, go back to the C: drive, and double click on Program Files folder. Then, double click on the Yahoo! folder, then the Messenger folder, then the skins folder. In the skins folder, go to the menu bar, click File, then select New, then Folder. Name the new folder to whatever skin you downloaded. (If you downloaded Halloween, name it Halloween.)
- Now, double click on this newly created folder, and when you're in it, hold control and hit v to paste the four files.
- The theme should then be in Messenger's preferences.
